A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent questions over construction quality.

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
